History
Founded in 1916, Jarrell is a strong community centered on its public schools. JISD is located in northern Williamson County. The district encompasses some 84 square miles. The mascot is The Cougars. There are four campuses within JISD: Jarrell High School, Jarrell Middle School, Igo Elementary School and Jarrell Elementary School. The district is home to roughly 2,000 students and is expected to average 9.4 percent growth for the next 10 years.
1997 TORNADO
On May 27, 1997, Central Texas experienced an unprecedented bout of severe weather. The Jarrell community was struck by an F-5 tornado, one of the strongest storms ever reported. Twenty-seven people, including 13 children, lost their lives to the storms that day.
In February 2019, the Jarrell ISD Board of Trustees voted to name its second elementary campus in after the Igos, a family of five all lost to the tornado: father Larry (age 45), mother Joan (age 46), daughter Audrey (age 17) and twin sons John and Paul (age 15). Joan was a teacher and Audrey, John and Paul were students in JISD.
The Jarrell Way
The Jarrell Way is the cultural foundation for the district. It is centered around three key principals 1) Focusing on Relationships 2) Being EPIC (Empowering Future-ready citizens; Providing Opportunities; Inspiring Excellence; Cultivating Innovation) 3) Being Safe, Respectable & Responsible.
